There are many unique, highly specific German words and terms that can’t be directly translated into English. One of our favorites is Wahlberliner, or “choice Berliner”. Wahlberliners are, by definition, not actually born in Berlin – they therefore can’t claim to be “Urberliner” (original Berliners), however, they are Berliners all the same. We’re a close-knit team of well-travelled history and hospitality experts, but first and foremost we’re a team of Wahlberliners.
Each of us is intimately familiar with the history, society, and culture of Berlin as well as Germany as a whole. We came here from all over the world, for various different reasons, and we love our chosen home. We’re all current or recently graduated students with degrees in the historical, cultural and political fields that we’re most passionate about. We are all huge fans of the city’s burgeoning food and arts scene, so we’ll be sure to share our tips with you as well. We’re really looking forward to meeting you and teaching you about Berlin.
We provide private tours in and around Berlin. While we recommend a minimum of four hours with each topic, tour lengths can be tailored to your schedule, and can be combined to mix more than one theme you are interested in. Fascinated by the Cold War as well as the food scene? No problem.
BERLIN COFFEE TOUR
Berlin’s original coffee tour is a great way to explore the city’s burgeoning coffee scene in a relaxed and enjoyable way while meeting new faces.
Two tours depart each Saturday at 10am(Kreuzberg) and 2pm(Mitte) from Cafe 9 at Berlin’s most famous food-hall, the Markthalle 9.
Anticipating 2017’s summer cruise season we will be offering fully accompanied shore excursions and transfers with a guide and port pick-up from Warnemünde / Rostock on the Baltic Sea.
Aside from tours, we’d gladly help organize other aspects of your trip. From airport transfers, cars, trains and hotels, to skydiving, houseboats and concert tickets, our concierge services aim to please. We can help manage school trips, shopping outings and museum tours as well – just ask we’ll take care of it. See our concierge section for more information.
We primarily give tours in English and German, but if you’d like to be shown around in another language, just ask! We’ll try our best to accommodate you.
Since the spring of 2016, When In Berlin Tours has been enthusiastically working with a newcomer on Berlin’s startup scene, TimeRiftTours. Through this partnership we’re testing and offering you a Virtual Reality experience of the Berlin Wall in a stunning 360°, hyper realistic immersive stereoscope. It’s a surreal experience where you stand in the actual space where the Berlin Wall stood, feel the wind in your hair, and hear the sounds of the city in your ears as the layers of time peel away before your eyes. We are excited to have this new tool at our disposal to help you engage Berlin’s history, and we’re looking forward to introducing it to you.
All private tours, from a few hours to several days, will be custom priced to your specific reservation. We typically walk or use public transportation on our tours, but if you’d like to travel around by bicycle, car, minivan or bus please make sure to include this in your booking request. Our regular coffee tour, however, has a fixed price.
We are always looking to network and collaborate with cafes, restaurants, museums, shops or independent guides here in Berlin. Send us an email if you’d like to start a conversation – we’re always keen on making new friends. And check out Our Tips page to see some of the places we enjoy and some of our current partners.
